The founder's guide to design without a designer

A practical, no-nonsense guide for founders who need to ship polished graphics before they can afford a designer — and how to make it look easy.

By Aya Morales

In the first year of a company, you will need graphics for pitch decks, landing pages, launch posts, hiring cards, investor updates, and ads. You will also not have a designer. Here is how to get through that year with visuals that look like a company worth taking seriously.

Pick a look and commit for six months

The single biggest mistake founders make is redesigning every three weeks. Pick a direction — clean and editorial, bold and expressive, technical and minimal — and stick with it. Consistency reads as intentionality.

The five graphics you will actually need

  1. A logo lockup that works small and dark.
  2. A hero banner template for launches and announcements.
  3. A social post template for updates and quotes.
  4. A deck cover and section divider for internal decks.
  5. A profile banner for LinkedIn and X.

Copy first, layout second

Write the headline before you open a design tool. A weak line dressed up in nice typography is still a weak line. If you can, sleep on the copy and revisit it before you design.

Steal, but from the right places

Study the marketing pages of companies you admire in adjacent industries — not direct competitors. Notice how much whitespace they leave, how few colors they use, how they treat their headlines. Copy the principles, not the pixels.

How to look bigger than you are

  • Fewer colors than you think you need.
  • One typeface at three sizes, not three typefaces at one size.
  • A single accent color used sparingly, not everywhere.
  • Photography over illustration when you are short on style.

Where Graphicly helps

Graphicly is essentially a design collaborator for founders who need output today. Describe what you need, refine it in chat, and export something you would be proud to send an investor. It is the closest thing to hiring a junior designer without doing the interview loop.
